Rhodesian Ridgeback Size

Many people have this idea that Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a 'big' dog. To set the record straight, there is a 'Breed Standard' for all purebred dogs.

A breed standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament, and appearance of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function with soundness essential. Breeders should at all times be mindful of features which could be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed.

According to the Rhodesian Ridgeback Breed Standard:

Size - the desirable heights are:

  • Dogs 63cms to 69cms

  • Bitches 61cms to 66cms

Weight - The desirable weights are:

  • Dogs 36.5kgs plus or minus 2.2kg

  • Bitches 32kgs plus or minus 2.2kg

The Ridgeback is a large, substantial, but not cumbersome dog, whose survival within its own environment depends upon its agility, speed and perseverance. The overall balance of the dog should be considered when assessing the combined factors of weight and height.
